Shelter Visit 9/2/2019
This week’s shelter visit started off running! The marathon that took place near the Francia train station added an unexpected bump in the plans which ended up in Anne joining the runners for part of the course just to get across the street and to the station on time to catch the train!
Anne and Sarah headed the team on Sunday working with a few new volunteers (welcome, Rosie and welcome back, Moa!) and some of the oldies but goodies (always love when you come, Maria!) They were able to get all of the dogs walked and spent some time talking to the cats. Jordi was left solo on cleaning duty yesterday, so there was more time to spend socializing them. Thanks, Jordi!
One of the dog team members brought in a stray kitten that they found on the street near Sitges. The cat is about two months old and already has found herself a foster home with potential adoption (keep your fingers and paws crossed, folks!) We’re gearing up for more kittens, as spring brings the highest numbers of kittens to the shelter, and are putting together a network of fosters. If you’d like to sign up, shoot us a message and we can set up an interview!
This week someone dropped off their sweet, elderly German Shepard at the shelter saying that she was ill and they didn’t have the time, energy, or money to give her the medical care she needs. Her name is Lassie and has visible tumors growing on her body. They wanted us to care for her and to simply pick her up when she was better, but that’s not how this works. We’re working on rearranging a few of our foster homes to get her into one that has the patience and love to devote to her. Just a reminder to everyone reading: a pet is for life. Through sickness and health. They’re only a small part of our lives, but we are their whole life. Don’t forget it.
In addition to Lassie, there has been another new dog dropped off at the shelter, or rather tied to the gates and left until morning. His name is Happy and couldn’t be more perfectly named! Seeing his tail wag and his excitement when greeted by anyone could make even the grumpiest person happy. He is looking for his forever home with a family who has a lot of time and love to devote to this bundle of joy!
Lastly, this week we learned that sweet Sol is very, very ill with Pyometra, an infection in the ovaries due to the fact that she was never spayed. Unfortunately this doesn’t come as a big shock, as she has lived her entire life in miserable conditions and was only first seen at a vet a few weeks ago, but it doesn’t mean that it hurts any less. Sol is an incredible dog, one with so much love to give, and we are very saddened by this news, especially as it comes in her first opportunity away from the horrors of her previous life. We were told that because of her age and poor health, there’s little we can do for her at this point other than give her the love and attention she needs and rightfully deserves while we can. And for this, we are extremely grateful to have the couple who have so willingly opened their hearts and home to her during this time. Without her foster parents, she would be suffering alone in the cold of her outdoor cage at the shelter without any attention or medicine or love.
Learning this has made us more determined than ever to change the conditions at the shelter so that absolutely zero dogs have to live a life like Sol’s. We refuse to look away. We refuse to stop until they’re all out and in the arms of their forever families.
Join our fight for the lives of the remaining dogs and cats. Adopt or foster one and give them a life of love and happiness.
If you would like to donate to our fund in Sol’s name, we will use the money to pay for her palliative care medicines and any small comforts she may need. You can also buy your own dogs favorite toy or bed for her through our Amazon wish list. Every little bit helps. Thank you.
Stinky, the new kitten.
