Leishmaniasis in Cats: What You Need to Know to Protect Your Furry One

Did you know that your cat could be at risk of contracting leishmaniasis, a serious and often fatal disease? Although this condition is more common in dogs, cats can also fall victim to this parasite, especially if your cat is immunocompromised.

According to an article by the Anicura Asturpet Veterinary Hospital, in recent years, more cases of leishmaniasis have been documented in cats, with an incidence of between 3% and 26% in some areas of Spain. Veterinarians report that more and more cats infected with the disease are turning up at veterinary appointments.

Read on to find out everything you need to know to protect your feline friend!

How Does Leishmaniasis Happen?

Leishmaniasis is transmitted by the bite of mosquitoes of the genera Lutzomyia and Phlebotomus, the "sandflies". Even cats that live indoors can be at risk, especially during the warm months. So pay extra attention!

Symptoms of Feline Leishmaniasis: What to Look For?

The symptoms may be subtle at first, but not ignoring them could save your cat's life. Look out for signs such as:

  • Unexplained weight loss

  • Lethargy and lack of energy

  • Skin sores that won't heal

  • Inflammation of the eyes

  • Anaemia

  • Kidney problems

Detecting these symptoms early can make all the difference in treatment and recovery.

Diagnosis and Prevention: The Road to Recovery

Leishmaniasis is diagnosed through blood tests and biopsies. If your cat is diagnosed, don't panic! There are treatments available that can control the symptoms and significantly improve your cat's quality of life. Remember, leishmaniasis is a chronic condition, but with the right care, your cat can live well.

Unfortunately, there is no vaccine against leishmaniasis for cats. But the good news is that you can prevent the disease! Anti-parasite collars, such as Seresto collars, are highly effective at protecting your cat from phlebotomus bites. Especially if you live in endemic areas or often travel to these places (this includes Barcelona city green spaces and pueblos in and around Catalunya), this prevention is essential.

A Story of Overcoming: Susi's Case

In the last six months, Gatalunya has had a few cases of Leishmania in cats. To illustrate the seriousness of this disease, let's share Susi's story. Susi is an adopted cat who has faced many challenges, including losing an eye. A few months ago, she was diagnosed with leishmaniasis and faced a tough battle for her life. She was hospitalised and several times we thought we would lose her. Thanks to the tireless efforts of her family and the right treatment, Susi recovered and today lives happily and healthily. Her story is a powerful reminder of the importance of prevention.

Take Good Care of Your Feline Friend

Leishmaniasis in cats is a real threat, but with the right information and care, you can protect your beloved companion. See your vet regularly and be sure to use preventative methods against phlebotomus bites. Pay special attention to hygiene, both for the animal and where it lives. Ideally, keep the house disinfected with anti-mosquito and anti-insect products, avoid stagnant water and install mosquito nets on the windows to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home (and as part of netting for your cat's safety).

Together, we can keep our feline friends safe and healthy. Don't wait until it's too late. Protect your cat today!
