Shelter Visit 9/3/2019
Starting off this weekly update with our most exciting news: our teammate Donna has opened her heart and home to Duna, the Golden Retriever, in FINLAND! This little Catalan golden girl has got the world in front of her and is off to start a new adventure there! Big thank you to Donna for arranging the entire thing: everything from finding her a foster home before her trip, to setting her up with a trainer to prepare her for the move, and all the paperwork and legal documents about moving a dog. Eres una solita, Donna. We are so lucky to have you as part of our team.
In other happy news, Simba and Luna have also both officially been adopted! All the paperwork has been signed and they’re happy as can be! Thank you to Tea and Emily for taking these guys into your homes and hearts. We know they’re all the better for having met you.
We lost Lassie last week Sunday after a long battle with Pyometra and malignant mammary gland tumors. She was a very kind soul, extremely noble, and sweetest dog that ever existed. Her suffering was made easier by the care of our teammate Sarah and her partner Alina. Without these two, she would have been alone in the last few weeks of her life. Thank you for doing the hard work, guys. We know that fostering an older dog is the hardest job out there. It was the kindest gift you could have given to her in her final weeks.
Spaying or neutering your animal not only helps keep the population of homeless pets down, but it also has many health benefits that the average person may not realize. In female animals, spaying helps prevent uterus infections (Pyometra) and breast tumors, which in many cases are malignant and deadly. For male animals, this prevents testicular cancer and prostate problems. Sol, Lassie, and Blacky all died because they were not castrated. Their untimely deaths were avoidable. For more information on benefits of spaying and neutering, take a look at the ASPCA website.
With this in mind, we are starting a foundation in the names of Sol, Lassie, and Blacky. While the project is still in the works, we have big plans to spay and neuter ALL the dogs in the shelter. We’ll have more details on this in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.
Lastly, we wanted to give a shout out to Gaby of Gato Garden for all the time and patience she dedicates to saving animals. She’s rescued over 200 cats in the past few years and continues saving lives. She recently took in a stray, pregnant cat from Murcia that gave birth this weekend to 5 beautiful kittens. Follow along on her instagram for all the details!
